What is Gastrointestinal disease?

Gastrointestinal diseases affect the digestive tract (where your food goes). These diseases may either be functional (e.g. a blockage) or structural (e.g. an abnormal growth) and can lead to nausea, vomiting, food poisoning, lactose intolerance and diarrhoea.

Functional diseases

Functional Diseases involve some type of obstruction or disease that causes the digestive tract to function incorrectly. They are the most common type of digestive problem and can cause constipation, nausea, gas, bloating, diarrhoea or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Structural Diseases involve some sort of irregular growth or structure in your digestive tract. Sometimes these need to be removed through surgery. Some common examples include haemorrhoids, polyps, colon cancers, inflammatory bowel disease, stenosis or strictures.
